Spacious well-ventilated and well-lit activity rooms with mobile furniture; allows free and flexible movement to cildren, who have a choice of work related to language, maths, general knowledge, etc. Children attend special subject rooms for music, dancing, art and craft work and social and natural sciences. They also have access to the library, museums, multipurpose hall, theatre, playground, swimming pool, deer and botanical parks, etc. Children aged 2.5 to 5+ and 6+ to 7+ or 8+ are grouped, not according to standards, but in mixed age-groups. There are not more than 25 to 35 children with one adult. There are two media of learning, English and Gujarati. Every child also learns sanskrit and Hindi. Children move to a highschool smoothly and do well. Cramming and learning by rote are avoided. There are no uniforms, no textbooks, nor any examinations, competitions, rewards and punishments. Children have not to pass through closed corridors but move on paths and walkways, through contryards, under the open sky and shady trees. Shreyas alumni are now spread over four continents of the world. Many are involved in the arts and graphics, architecture and design, the performing arts, medicine, mental health, science, education, law, engineering, farming, horticulture, business and industry, armed forces, social work, etc. Several alumni have made a mark in their respective fields. In the last couple of years there has been a global upsurge of interest in the Montessori Movement. We were delighted to receive and welcome groups from Mumbai, Japan and USA. Much enthusiasm has been expressed for closer interaction between us. Shreyas has shown a willingness to offer its physical resources in Ahmedabad for such interaction, as in the past, when Abs Joostan held two AMI Montessori International Residential Courses in Shreyas during 1971-73, which were availed of by more than 300 trainees from India and abroad. New proposals from USA are under consideration. |
